R.I. cadets get navigation pointers from National Guard members
6 February 2008

John Devany, 2nd Lt

RHODE ISLAND -- A clear Saturday in January  found 20 cadets and five senior members from all five Rhode Island Wing squadrons receivng Basic Land Navigation instruction from the 56th Troop Command of the Rhode Island National Guard .

For the wing's first Army Guard Shadowing Day, cadets in the 102nd, Newport County, East Bay, West Bay and South County Composite squadrons learned correct map reading, how to plot courses and find their bearings on a map and how to work with their pace count through the woods.

The officer in charge of the state National Guard Shadowing Program, 2nd Lt. Amanda Avila of the Newport County squadron, brought the cadets and Guard together at Camp Fogarty in East Greenwich.

The Guard provided transportation and muffins for breakfast and treated the cadets to a pizza lunch.
Halloween Saves

RHODE ISLAND -- Halloween night found the Rhode Island Wing helping the Rhode Island State Police, Environmental Police and Emergency Management Agency search the state's Wildlife Management Area for three missing hikers.

The search plane, a Cessna 182, was piloted by Lt. Col. Rui Rodrigues of wing headquarters, with 1st Lt. Benjamin Emerick of the 102nd Composite Squadron serving as mission observer. Lt. Col. Stanley Wilbur of wing headquarters served as agency liaison.

The three hikers, all 22 years old, started a small signal fire and used their dying cell phone for rescue. Searchers were able to use the cell phone's Global Positioning System coordinates to begin the air search.

When nothing could be seen at the position indicated by the cell phone's coordinates, the team then began a grid search of the area. Emerick observed a faint, orange glow in the distance, and the plane flew to that target.  A signal fire was confirmed, and the plane circled, relaying the fire's coordinates. The missing hikers were safe, and the CAP members returned to base

R.I. Wing commander, staff convene to map out coming year
3 October 2007

Col. Anthony Gagliardi, commander of the Rhode Island Wing, reserves a date during the wing staff's first ever calendar meeting.  The Rhode Island Air National Guard Air Show, three wing search and rescue exercises, the Wakefield Annual Hot Air Balloon Festival, the Rhode Island National Guard's Leapfest, and the wing’s Cadet Ball, encampment and training days, and a proposed  inaugural wing golf tournament all made the calendar ... so far.
